Study Abroad – Application deadlines – a myth or reality?
by H Hasan
“A stitch in time saves nine” is a French proverb of the 1700’s, it still holds true.
Ideally speaking, one year if not more in advance is required to apply to all good universities around the World. However, this is not entirely true. For instance, in some of the world’s top universities you can apply as late as 4 months before the course starts. But you do run the risk of not getting your preferred course.
In an ideal scenario, we recommend you start a year in advance to give enough time for your applications to be processed and to prepare for your time overseas.
For undergraduate all top universities have deadlines and if one is a serious student then must follow the French Proverb. For UK undergrad programs UCAS is where you begin almost a year in advance and there too some universities have deadlines within those deadlines, for instance, Oxford University application deadline is 15th October.
There are many courses which require a wait of one year like in medicine or dentistry where seats are limited. It is always best to apply as soon as you can and in case of change of plans you may get your offer deferred.
For PG 6 months is a good lead time but again if there were any scholarships offered, they may no longer be available when you apply late. Pakistan is the last minute market where people tend to make all the decision at the eleventh hour and then struggle to find a place or settle for less preferred programs.
So plan ahead and know what you need before applying. Timely application helps you register for IELTS , GMAT or any other pre-admission requirements and it also put you in a good chance to get bursaries or scholarships, if available.
